The ruthless ‘hatted’ rating system operated and managed by AFGF (Australian Good Food Guide) backed by The Age and Sydney Morning Herald has released its 2024 award winners. Many of the usual fine dining juggernauts that consistently remain in the top tier of the list appear again in this years edition, but only three restaurants have managed to be awarded three hats, down from four restaurants in the previous year.
Here’s how the scoring metrix works: Anonymous critics from AFGF dine and consider six components all based on the food only. These are ingredients, taste, presentation, technique, value and consistency. Based on a score out of twenty, a score below fifteen does not see an establishment awarded with a hat. 15-15.5/20 awards one hat, 16-17.5/20 awards two hats and 18-20 awards three hats. No restaurant in Australian history has received a score of 20/20.
